Back to Pipe Organs of West - Central PA
Great Principals |
Year: 1961, original from 1890's Location: St. John's Cathedral, Johnstown PA Remarks: With the parish church building destroyed by the famous Johnstown Flood of 1889, this eclectic instrument was donated by the steel magnate, Andrew Carnegie, for the the new church erected shortly after the flood. Though the instrument was given by a notable benefactor, the organ has a rather lackluster tonal quality. Some of the original ranks such as the Great division Doppel Flute are of fine quality, however. Finally in 1961, after partial rebuilds and tonal enlargements over the years, the Tellers Co. of Erie PA totally rebuilt the instrument complete with all new electropnuematic ventil chests, and a new console. In the early 1980's, when I served as organist of the Cathedral, I releathered all of the pneumatics for the ventil stop actions, the pedal chests, and the console coupler system. This work has allowed the organ to remain playable today. The parish is now in need of some new benefactors to facilitate a complete upgrade of the instrument.
